Endangered squirrel glider has a new chance

This beautiful little squirrel glider has a second chance at life with our great Wires volunteers who will feed him round the clock till he recovers from injuries sustained by a cat.

We are very lucky that our motel in Urunga is the meeting place where volunteers hand over injured animals

Farewell to our mosaic artists

It was great to have Christine Stewart staying here while she was teaching a 5 day course on Mosaic with Fused Art Glass. I was lucky enough to get a look at the participant’s work at the Urunga Hall. It was a great set up with Christine’s mini kilns set up around the walls and lots of space and light for everyone.

I definitely want to have a go at some of the glassware .

Urunga Boardwalk by Ruth Fahey

The boardwalk is a great favourite with our guests as it is a wonderful way of seeing the lagoon, the River and the beach. And it’s only 600 metres from the motel.

I’ve got to get down there more often.

On Transit of Venus Day Joe came in for coffee and he sent me this photo. He edited it as a pencil sketch. It looks south from the Urunga Board Walk. Nunguu Mirral is in the centre, it is an Aboriginal sacred site of the Gumbaynggir people. Thanks so much Joe.

Perfect poached egg

For our guest Charlene who asked how we made our perfect poached eggs. The perfect poached egg starts with a happy chook . Meet Dora the explorer. Then using a small bowl crack the egg so that you can see the 2 different kinds of egg white.

I use a small electric skillet to boil a couple of inches of water. As soon as it is boiling I add vinegar and turn the frypan off. Gently, gently transfer the egg from the bowl to the water. Cover with a glass lid and wait patiently.

This is a slow cooked egg which gives you that yummy texture.

Today was a perfect autumn day here in beautiful downtown Urunga. The Sawtell Mamils cycled in for early coffee and they enjoyed a great ride.

Excuse me while I speak to a walk-in customer.

That’s what it’s all about – when you run a small motel. Life is one long interruption.

So my new web site resolution is to get out and enjoy our beautiful surroundings more .

Cycling the Waterfall Way

The Waterfall Way from the New England Tablelands to the Coffs Coast is a popular route for cyclists looking for a great bike route in Northern NSW. Naturally, you’ll be passing through mountains and many find the easy option is to start out in Armidale and go toward the coast (because it is mostly downhill).

Whether you’re starting or ending on the Coast, Kalang River Motel in Urunga is a great accommodation for your Waterfall Way bicycle adventure.

Toast 2012 in Urunga – A Music, Food and Wine Festival

Every year, Urunga holds the Toast Festival which celebrates life with music, good food and wine. Now in it’s 6th year, the Toast 2012promises to be a great event for locals and visitors.

Normally, the festival kicks off with a black tie dinner dance on the Saturday evening followed by live music, over 60 regional stalls with food from the area, and a range of boutique beers and a variety of Australian Wines to taste.

While the grown ups enjoy music, wine and food, the kids will find a variety of things to do from a jumping castle to sand wizardry to bungy jumping and more. Urunga’s shops are open and you’ll often find craft tables set up around town and vintage cars are on display.

Toast 2012 runs from 10am to 4pm. You’ll find the festival activities where the Bellingen and Kalang rivers meet the sea at Morgo Street Reserve which is a comfortable walk from Kalang River Motel.
